PGMA Welcomes SGF's Scottish Election Manifesto, Urging Support for Local Retailers

With the Scottish General Election coming up on 7th May 2026, PGMA stands with SGF in asking the next Scottish Government to strongly back local stores and offer essential protection for these vital community services.

The SGF manifesto, already shared with all major political parties in Scotland, puts the growing problem of retail crime at the top of its list. This lines up exactly with the key worries of PGMA members. The numbers are concerning: an 83.5% increase in violence towards shop workers, and the average cost of retail crime has jumped by 38% to £19,673 per store in 2024/25. These figures clearly show the urgent need for more resources and new laws to tackle this issue.

Beyond safety, the manifesto also points out the big challenges local businesses face from tighter rules and rising running costs. This includes less real support for business rates. These issues seriously affect how much businesses can grow, limit how much money they can put back into local services, and ultimately lead to higher prices for customers already struggling with the cost of living.

Graham Watson, president of SGF and operator of Watson’s Grocers, spoke clearly about how important the sector is: "Retail is absolutely vital to the Scottish Economy, and convenience stores are at the very heart of the communities they serve. Providing essential lifeline goods and facilities that boost local wellbeing, growth, and employment."

PGMA agrees with Mr. Watson's message that the new government should ensure staff and businesses can work safely and without fear of abuse.

PGMA encourages all its members and others involved in Scottish retail to join these important discussions. SGF plans to host a Scottish General Election Hustings in Spring 2026 for retailers and convenience representatives. This will be a valuable chance to hear directly from all major political parties in Scotland, who will be invited to set out their plans for the next Scottish Parliament and how they will support Scotland's local shops.
